The crystalline structure of small copper clusters deposited onto polycrystalline graphite has been studied by means of extended fine Auger structure spectroscopy analyzing the oscillating features observed beyond the Cu M2,3VV Auger transition as a function of the cluster size. Following the extended X-ray absorption fine structure data analysis our results clearly show a contraction of the nearest-neighbour distance and an increase of the Debye-Waller factor as the cluster size decreases.

Abstract

The crystalline structure of small copper clusters deposited onto polycrystalline graphite has been studied by means of extended fine Auger structure spectroscopy analyzing the oscillating features observed beyond the Cu M2,3VV Auger transition as a function of the cluster size. Following the extended X-ray absorption fine structure data analysis our results clearly show a contraction of the nearest-neighbour distance and an increase of the Debye-Waller factor as the cluster size decreases.
