Background and aim. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of endopeptidases produced by cytokine-stim- ulated lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMCs) and myofibroblasts, playing a key role in tissue remodelling in both physiological and pathological conditions. Till now, a quantitative assessment of MMP expression in coeliac disease (CD) has never been performed. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to characterise the MMP pattern in LPMCs isolated from coeliac duodenal mucosa in comparison to normal condition, and to investigate the putative influence of the two main Th1 cytokines, IFN-g and TNF-, on their expression.
