The cruise terminal of the Civitavecchia Port is located on the ’Cristoforo Colombo’ breakwater rear-side. Renovating and widening the terminal quay has made it necessary to reconsider its safety, particularly against overtopping. An intensive laboratory investigation on the ’Colombo’ breakwater overtopping performance has been therefore carried out at the ‘Laboratorio di Idraulica Ambientale e Marittima’ (LIAM) of the University of L’Aquila in order to optimise a new breakwater design. Both rubble mound and composite breakwaters with several different parapet walls have been studied by means of a 2D physical model in scale 1 to 35. The present paper concentrates on the composite breakwater tests, illustrating both criteria and results of the wave overtopping investigation.
