Dynamic susceptibility contrast- enhanced (DSC) MRI is a technique for the assessment of cerebral haemodynamics which may be altered in most diseases. The first pass of a paramagnetic Gd-chelate through the capillary bed after rapid intra-venous injection induces local magnetic field inhomogeneities leading to fast dephasing of proton spins and hence to a reduction in the transverse relaxation time T2* of tissue. On a series of fast Spin-Echo images this reduction in T2* is observed as a transient drop in signal intensity which is approximately proportional to the instantaneous concentration of contrast medium in tissue. We investigated the efficacy of DSC MRI in characterization of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and in assessment of disease activity.
