Additive manufacturing technologies (AMTs) are expected to heavily influence the competitiveness of companies. According to some scholars, the adoption of AMTs may have a relevant impact on the location of production activities. This paper aims to verify if AMTs may act as an enabling technology for manufacturing reshoring. The paper adopts an explorative research approach based on eight companies which based their reshoring decisions on the adoption of AMTs. Findings seem to confirm the research hypothesis. At the same time, AMTs seem to influence the firm’s decision in terms of governance mode.

Abstract

Additive manufacturing technologies (AMTs) are expected to heavily influence the competitiveness of companies. According to some scholars, the adoption of AMTs may have a relevant impact on the location of production activities. This paper aims to verify if AMTs may act as an enabling technology for manufacturing reshoring. The paper adopts an explorative research approach based on eight companies which based their reshoring decisions on the adoption of AMTs. Findings seem to confirm the research hypothesis. At the same time, AMTs seem to influence the firm’s decision in terms of governance mode.
