Aim of the paper is the study of potentialities given by 3D modelling and computer-based visualization in historical and architectural values analysis of historical centers. The virtual reconstruction of how historical urban landscapes changed during time - made according to architectural surveying and archival documents - describes the processes of modification and transformation of historical city, to understand past configurations and current values. A case study focuses on an area of the historical center of L'Aquila with deep phenomena of modification and stratification over centuries.
