The dynamic focus adjustment is a particular application of a laser-cutting machine, in which an electromechanical actuator (EMA) moves the lens for the correct focus of the laser beam. The Permanent Magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) used in the EMA has been redesign and optimized with a different and new approach. Abstract

The previous architecture (8-pole, 9-slots) is verified by FEM and tested. The new motor is directly integrated with the mechanical component due to the cramped space in order to minimize the total inertia and the motor's size. Then based on designing consideration a new solution is proposed and an optimization procedure has been establish in order to have in the same envelope more performances. A prototype has been manufactured using the design data of the optimization procedure. Test results confirm the improving performances and the goodness of the prototype.
