The Lanciani’s Collection represents an invaluable and inexhaustible source for studies on the history of architecture and of the urban transformations of Rome and its countryside, in reason of richness and heterogeneity of documentation, largely graphics, collected by the researcher. A collection where the Nineteenth century, in continuity with the second half of the previous century, is widely represented and indicative of the modern "historical-philological Archaeology" practiced by Lanciani, of his technical-scientific approach and interest for the constructive aspects of the architecture; these last supported by his formation of architect and civil engineer. The water - since antiquity subject of the control for the management of the city life and its territory - constitutes the red wire that joins the drawings of the collection here analysed. Drawings which together returns the plural interests directed by Lanciani to this matter, in coherence with his archaeological research and publications dedicated to the topography of Rome and its countryside, but also, to his constant commitment directs in the modernization of the city, from the embanking of the Tiber to the problems of urban transformation.
La collezione Lanciani rappresenta, per l’ampiezza e la stessa eterogeneità della documentazione, in larga parte grafica, raccolta dallo studioso, un’inestimabile e inesauribile fonte per gli studi sulla storia dell’architettura e delle trasformazioni della città di Roma e della sua Campagna. Una raccolta dove l’Ottocento, in continuità con la seconda metà del secolo precedente, è ampiamente rappresentato e indicativo della moderna “archeologia storico-filologica” praticata da Lanciani, del suo approccio tecnico-scientifico e degli interessi per gli aspetti costruttivi dell’architettura favoriti dalla formazione di architetto e ingegnere civile. L’acqua, intesa quale elemento oggetto di controllo sin dall’antichità per la gestione della vita della città e del suo territorio, costituisce il filo rosso che unisce i disegni della collezione qui analizzati. Disegni il cui insieme restituisce gli interessi plurimi rivolti da Lanciani a questa materia in sintonia, in primo luogo, con le sue ricerche archeologiche e le pubblicazioni dedicate alla topografia di Roma e della sua Campagna, ma anche al suo impegno costante e diretto nella modernizzazione della città, dall’arginatura del Tevere alle problematiche della trasformazione urbana.
