Abstract

During the 19th century testing on stone work is concentrated, in particular, on the invention of new machines specialazing in cutting and other particular uses. This occured in coherence with the scientific and technological approach of the time, as well as in continuance with traditional empiricism. A particularly strong traditionb in Rome and in the Church State, in which the most important families of marmorari controlled the market of selling and manufacturing stone (precious antique marble in particular). The study analyses the 'microcosm' that sorrounded the invention of new handsaw and other machines used to improve the quality and productiveness in stone cutting, illustrating the different approaches made by foreign contractors (from Milan), scientist (from Bologna) and Roman stonemasons.
