Abstract

The via Eleniana water tank stands in an urban junction, particularly interesting for its complexity and for ancient and modern history of Rome. This is a place of border, interrelation and friction between impressive monumental structures - the City Walls, Porta Maggiore, Santa Croce church - and an urban and building network expression of the expansion of the last decades of Nineteenth century first of Twentieth - as the railway and tramway, the busy urban arteries on which converge the Esquilino district and the architectures (Museum of Grenadiers) of post Italian Unification. The impressive volumetric mass and a Roman language chosen by the architect Raffaele De Vico, in the refined solution of facewalls, dialog with the roman remains. The architecture deliberately hides the imposing structures of four large tanks, built in reinforced concrete by engineer-entrepreneur of German origin Rodolfo Stoelcker. The reservoir shows his double soul also in the conduction of yard. It was built in two different phases: first, the erection of the reservoirs (1928-1932) on pre-existent foundation; second, the completion of the 'skin' (starting from 1935).
