Environmental fragmentation and habitat reduction are among the most diffused factors that produce biodiversity loss and transportation infrastructures are the principal elements that determine and exasperate such conditions. Furthermore the infrastructure system represents movement barriers most non-flying terrestrial animals because of obstacle like guard rails, new-jerseys, walls, enclosures and vehicular traffic. Each obstacle creates a different degree of occlusion which acts on the different species in different way. The present study proposes a methodological approach to compare the roads technical characteristics with their impact on wildlife movements. The analytical procedure is called “Occlusion Profile” (OP). It is presented as a longitudinal diagram of the transportation infrastructure along which the degree of interference is expressed in consideration of the entity and the typology of obstacles that are present. The data obtained may be a valid support in the studies of environmental evaluations and to address mitigation measures to reduce habitat fragmentation.
