La storia incontra la scienza tra l’Abruzzo e il Texas. Architettura, restauro e controllo ambientale del costruito storico – History Meets Science between Abruzzo and Texas. Architecture, Restoration and Environmental Control of Historical Buildings

History -- specifically history of the built heritage -- and science grasping reality through quantitative methods -- are at the core of the articles collected in this volume. The articles present research carried out by faculty and scholars from Università degli Studi dell'Aquila (UNIVAQ) and from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), research implemented because of a bilateral agreement between two academic institutions. The articles also present studies conducted by professionals and officers from Italian public institutions in Abruzzo: The Superintendence for Archeology, Beaux Arts, and Landscape of L'Aquila and surrounding "Cratere,"; and ARTA - Abruzzo, the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection; and ARTA-Abruzzo. The articles focus on the analysis of historic structures and on the architectural and typological construction features of the built heritage located in the two geographical regions of the agreement. Although the agreement was formulated with the fields of History of Architecture and Historic Preservation in mind, the chapters in this book take a multidisciplinary approach with the aim of exploring the relationship between building and environment. Such a relationship is evident in the Abruzzo region because of recurring seismic events, in Texas because of climatic conditions.

La Storia, del costruito storico, e la Scienza, volta a puntualizzarne gli aspetti quantitativi, sono i fili conduttori dei contributi raccolti nel volume, che espongono, in sintesi, le ricerche di docenti e ricercatori dell’Università degli Studi dell’Aquila (UNIVAQ) e dell’University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), avviate nell’ambito dell’accordo bilaterale tra le due istituzioni universitarie, e l’apporto di professionisti ed esponenti delle istituzioni abruzzesi, che hanno collaborato a tali studi (Soprintendenza Archeologica, Belle Arti e Paesaggio L’Aquila e Cratere, Agenzia Regionale per la Tutela Ambientale – ARTA- Abruzzo). I contributi sono finalizzati, in primo luogo, alla conoscenza delle preesistenze e delle peculiarità architettoniche, tipologiche e costruttive dell’edilizia storica nei due territori coinvolti nell’accordo, nato in seno alla Storia dell’Architettura e al Restauro. Essi, però, sviluppano i temi di analisi anche attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare, volto, in particolare, alla comprensione del rapporto edificio-ambiente, fortemente influenzato, in Abruzzo, dai ripetuti eventi sismici e, in Texas dalle condizioni climatiche.
