A key feature of smart grids is the ability to dynamically and simultaneously handle generation and utilization systems by implementing functions aimed at managing power peaks, balancing load, compensating for sudden voltage dips etc. In addition, peak demand can be properly managed also avoiding simultaneously activated loads, and turning private, auxiliary generators from standby to active at maximum criticality moments. Furthermore, an advantage of paramount importance is the possibility to optimize end user's consumption through the combined use of smart meters and automatic load management, especially whenever energy tariffs for different day times are taken into account. Abstract

This paper concentrates on the development of algorithms able to monitor, protect and optimize electrical installations by reproducing in laboratory the actual savings obtained through the introduction of automation in these systems.
