Modern mobility systems are quickly evolving in terms of advanced navigation and improved safety, thanks to increasingly connected, geo-localized and cyber-secure vehicles. A vehicle represents an “intelligent” node of a vehicular network, which can contribute to implement an efficient and safe traffic flow management through the collection, processing and exchanging of a huge amount of data: the goal is to prevent potential dangerous situations and to improve the efficiency in global usage of resources. The challenge of realizing an integrated mobility management architecture for commercial vehicles is addressed by the EMERGE project: it addresses GPS-GALILEO-based multi-constellation and multi-sensor fusion for localization, ad-hoc vehicular communication technologies and the upcoming CV2X paradigm enabled by 5G, and cybersecurity techniques for intra-inter vehicular communication. The aims of the project are to (i) implement accident risk prevention functions, (ii) implement dynamic and collaborative navigation, (iii) provide updated and geo-localized mobility services through the use of mobile Edge/Cloud computing techniques, for the dual operating mode of “everyday” and "emergency”. Field trials will be carried out through a fleet of commercial vehicle prototypes with the enhanced platforms proposed, in the city of L'Aquila, where the 5G technology experimentation is underway and the potential of novel satellite technologies can in turn be exploited.
