Abstract

Even when it seems materially absent, silence in the theatre is evoked as part of the substance of the sounds themselves, traceable between the interstices of the word, during its continuous flows. The es- say aims to break the rigid dichotomy between sound and silence, since as sociologist David Le Breton maintains: «the word is a modulation of silence and the silence a modulation of the word». In recent times the question of silence in the theatre has been suggested by some works that focus strictly on sound. We propose as case studies two recent works of Chiara Guidi: Monsieur Teste. Una prosa filosofica per contrab- basso, percussione e voce and Edipo re di Sofocle. Esercizio di memoria per quattro voci femminili. Already in the philosophical field, Jean-Luc Nancy wonders if philosophy has replaced listening with something closer to understanding; so in these pages we ask ourselves which word in theatre can be understood as a declination of empty and full, a pure crossing of silence.
