Abstract The latest regulatory update at EU level on energy matters is the Directive 2018/844/EU that introduced an important novelty about the fact that "[redacted] ... The research and testing of new solutions capable of improving the energy performance of buildings and historical sites have to be encouraged, ensuring at the same time the cultural heritage protection and conservation.” At European level, there are finally signs of awareness of the importance of buildings and historical contexts. But the study of the state of the art has shown the lack of methodological references and best practices related this matter. For this reason, a question to be answered concerns the search for compatible intervention methods, techniques and strategies to implement the historical buildings energy efficiency. Therefore, this paper will illustrate a research methodology aimed at searching for compatible intervention methods, techniques and strategies to gain this purpose. This method is based on several phases to evauate different efficiency strategies based on the transformability level of the walls in order to identify the ones which could be compatible with the values and, at the same time, energy efficient. The results consist on a matrix that is able to guide the design choices according to certain criteria. The described methodology was then applied to an aggregate located in the historical centre of Fontecchio (Aq), a municipality of the Abruzzo inland.
