Background: Periodic fever syndromes are caused by deregulation of Interleukin-1β release. Results: Defective autophagy leads to accumulation of damaged mitochondria in monocytes. Conclusion: Mitochondrial components in the cytosol cause priming of monocytes for Interleukin-1β release.
