Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a relatively rare but potentially disabling disease. We report an unusual case of a patient with SSEH and contemporary rupture of an aortic abdominal aneurysm (AAA). The clinical experience suggests that a prompt neuroradiological diagnosis and rapid surgical decompression are essential to allow good recovery. We also discuss the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and prognosis.

Abstract

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a relatively rare but potentially disabling disease. We report an unusual case of a patient with SSEH and contemporary rupture of an aortic abdominal aneurysm (AAA). The clinical experience suggests that a prompt neuroradiological diagnosis and rapid surgical decompression are essential to allow good recovery. We also discuss the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and prognosis.
