Giardini di pietre: manutenzione, conservazione, restauro dei cimiteri storici

While on the one hand historical and monumental cemeteries are considered gardens as places of public interest that offer spaces of quiet and meditation, on the other hand their conservation and management presents some specific issues that differ from the objectives defined in the 1981 Charters. The perpetual balance of plant architectures and the permanently unchanged conditions (as well as the reconstruction later abolished in the Italian version, but not in the international ones) appear in contrast with the meaning of these places and with the concept of passing of time, expressed by the natural alteration of materials and artifacts. It is therefore proposed to update the Florence Charters by extending the reflections to the ‘stones gardens’ that have arisen for purposes other than leisure ones, modulating the conservative guidelines on the basis of the meanings and specific values represented by each place.
