240 patients with either transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or stroke in the carotid territory, underwent CW-Doppler ultrasound evaluation and recording of vascular risk factors. Univariate statistical analysis showed significantly more stenoses 50 to 99% and occlusions in patients over 35 years of age, with arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and stroke on admission. Only arterial hypertension was significant in the multivariate model. The 5-year follow-up showed a significant increase in overall and cardiac mortality, and recurrence of non-fatal stroke in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis 50 to 99%, suggesting a wider use of endarterectomy in young adults.
