Vincenzo Cardarelli (1887‑1959) is one of the great interpreters of the Italian poetry of the last century. However, he is too often left on the margins of the literary canon. In fact, the poet of Tarquinia rejects the stylistic eloquence and the artificial language of his contemporaries in favor of discursiveness and prosaicity to face and overcome the moments of disintegration and crisis of his soul. Starting from these peculiarities, the paper takes in to account a group of lyrics built around the association of love and pain. In poems such as Amicizia, Amore, Distacco, Attesa, Abbandono, Passato, Crudele addio, Rimorso, love is described through feelings of bitterness, disappointment, loneliness
