The carrier-mediated transport of copper ions through bulk liquid membranes has been examined and the transport capability of novel lipophilic polyamines investigated. The effects of hydrophilic/lipophilic balance, the nature of the membrane and buffer, the pH of the receiving phase, the carrier, and the metal salt concentration on the transport efficiency were examined and optimal conditions for transport es-tablished. High transport efficiency - 98% of CuII in the receiving phase after 48 h - was provided by carrier 2b (1x10-3 M in CH2Cl2) with propionate buffer (pH = 4.60) as source phase, containing 5x10-3 M CuII, and 0.1 M HCl as stripping phase. Single-metal ion transport experiments showed potential transport selectivity for cupric ions over other ions such as ZnII, NiII, and CoII.
