In this paper, some relationships for modelling force components, cutting energy and workpiece surface roughness in grinding ofmetalmatrix composites, are proposed. To this end, experimental data obtained from tests carried out on a horizontal surface grinder are employed. Grinding wheels based upon alumina abrasive were used and aluminium alloy samples reinforced with silicon carbide were ground. The empirical models obtained could be utilised to predict how the cutting parameters affect the grinding process and the machining quality of these non-traditional materials. The influence of shape, orientation and content of the reinforcement on material grindability is taken into consideration.
