Abstract

From anonymous sculptures to protagonists of urban spaces, the water tanks and the piezometric towers present in urban and territorial landscapes constitute functional architectures of particular figurative and structural value, to investigate and safeguard. A large and diversified heritage, expression of a historical, geographical, and landscape identity for the relationship woven with the context of belonging. In the last two centuries, as reply to the growing water needs of territories and cities, they became an expression of technological progress and linguistic research applied to infrastructural and industrial systems; nevertheless, for a long time they have appeared alien and inaccessible. In recent decades, these architectures, sometimes deprive of their usefulness, have become the object, in the world, of a rich range of re-uses as well as of unjustified demolitions. An international scenario in which to include significant Italian examples and, among these, some cases in Rome; examples which, while sometimes retaining their original function, well express their intrinsic urban and territorial role of focal elements, as well as the need to be protected and, also, endowed of new cultural contents.
