OCCURRENCE OF METABOLIC SYNDROME IN A GROUP OF BUILDING WORKERS ABSTRACT. Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is defined as the simultaneous presence of different cardiovascular risk factors that increase probability of strokes. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of metabolic syndrome and related risks in a group of construction workers. Subjects, materials and methods: the sample examined consists of 690 male workers divided into 2 groups: italian (aged between 20 and 74 years) and foreigners (aged between 18 and 68 years). The sample was subjected to clinical investigation, blood examination (in particular CBC with formula, glucose, transaminases, triglycerides, cholesterol, creatinine, BUN) and urinalysis. Results: In agreement with previous studies, the survey revealed prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Italian population to be higher than in foreign workers. Furthermore builder and the laborer resulted to be the most affected group for both populations examined with a correlation between 172 G Ital Med Lav Erg 2010; 32:4, Suppl 2 http://gimle.fsm.it the occurrence of metabolic syndrome and alcohol consumption. In addiction among the Italian group, a good correlation between the metabolic syndrome and BMI (body mass index) was found. Discussion: Occupational physician’s management of building workers affected by this syndrome is a complex task that requires an integrated approach involving all the subjects of prevention. In this occupational sector medical surveillance assumes even more a basic role for prevention and promotion of safety and health.
