I present here a previously unpublished metrical translation into rhyming Italian verse of fragments taken from Victor Hugo's La Fin de Satan (« Hors de la terre », III, II ; « L’Ange Liberté », 1-4, 7-8). The translation is followed by a commentary in which I explain the principles on which I have operated in this translation into rhyming verse. An interpretation of the text is combined with an analysis of my translation choices, both in terms of prosody and of the various translation units.

Abstract

I present here a previously unpublished metrical translation into rhyming Italian verse of fragments taken from Victor Hugo's La Fin de Satan (« Hors de la terre », III, II ; « L’Ange Liberté », 1-4, 7-8). The translation is followed by a commentary in which I explain the principles on which I have operated in this translation into rhyming verse. An interpretation of the text is combined with an analysis of my translation choices, both in terms of prosody and of the various translation units.
