This essay considers the contribution of Italian missionaries to the exploration of the sources of the Nile, and the strategic function of water in the process of evangelization in Sudan between the middle and the last quarter of the Nineteenth century. It focuses on the travel reports of Angelo Vinco and Stanislao Carcereri, and especially on testimony of their activity of proselytism, from which relevant geographical aspects emerge.
