abstract The freedom of the real: towards a megaric philosophy of nature Abstract: Virtuality, wrote Manuel De Landa, is «the new ontological category» introduced by Deleuze to refer to the intensive nature of physis. Virtuality must explain how the intensive can give rise to the extensive, how the «metric» emerges from the «non-metric» by passing through «a cascade of symmetry breaks». Can those strange philosophers called «Megarics» help us in this effort to define a new status for Nature naturing? Bergson’s critique of determinism entails a reassess ment and a new interpretation of the Megaric hypothesis.
