The preliminary results of a case-control study on asbestos exposure and SV40 in 11 malignant mesotheliomas (MMs) and 18 bladder urotheliomas (BUs) are reported, SV40 DNA was found in 7 (63.6%) MMs and in 6 (33.3%) BUs. A history of asbestos exposure was established in the cases of 8 MM patients (72.7%) and 4 BU patients (22.2%), In our small scale study, SV40 was positively associated with MMs from asbestos-exposed patients (OR 9.0, CL 0.5-143.8), but not with MMs from patients without asbestos exposure (OR 0.9, CL 0.06-12.5). The association between asbestos and MM in the whole population under study was clearly positive (OR 9.3, CL 1.6-52.7) and the strength of the association was higher when evaluated for SV40-positive MMs (30.0, CL 1.4-611.8). Our study suggests that SV40 plays a role as a co-factor with asbestos in MM pathogenesis.
