The contribution deals with the case of Fanny Sadowski (1826-1906), a much-loved actress and actress manager during the middle years of the 19th century. Through the comparison with well-known periodicals of the time, memoirs and various kinds of documentary sources, an attempt is made to reconstruct the trend of her first successful decade, from 1843 to 1853, with the aim of tracing Sadowski’s artistic identity: her training experience, her professional choices, the development of her own image as an actress. Starting with the identification of these dynamics, we reflect in conclusion on the possible reasons that led Sadowski to settle, from 1855, in Naples theaters, such as the need to delimit her reach and power within safe and precise boundaries.
