Multi-technicalities approach to the preservation survey: modeling andreconstruction of Arquata del Tronto

In August of 2016, the town of Arquata del Trontosuffered an earthquake that produced significantdamages to the village and the medieval Rocca’sstructure and integrity.The earthquakes of 2016 and 2017 greatly dam-aged the structures added to the castle and thehistorical construction itself: the roof was per-forated, the battlements fell, parts of the wallsthemselves crumbled. These events were under-stood as opportunities. The Rocca was still stand-ing after the series of unfortunate events, thusholding a new symbolic function for Arquata.This proposal aims to research a method to re-generate the place by following three scales ofintervention unified in the landscape: territo-rial, urban and architectural. Based on the var-ious reflections and analyses derived from thedifferent survey models, we demonstrate thatpreservation actions depend on minor and nec-essary interventions in terms of connection and building restoration while keeping the culturalbackground and importance of the area intact. Todo this, an accurate territorial and architecturalsurvey is needed, based on mixed techniques be-tween landscape and architecture. The aim of theprocess developed is the analysis of the site ac-cessibility, creating a hinge between the survey,the restoration, and finally, an evaluation of therestoration project inserted in the territory itself.
