The paper reflects on the village as a geographical object irreducible to the definitions of inner peripheries: a category that has revived the discourse on these territories, but has also flattened it to perspectives that often reiterate oppositional binarisms and limit the understanding of practices, subjectivities and hybrid spatialities. Taking a distance from this category, the article considers the village beyond the dichotomous opposition with the urban: a relational space in which rurality is traversed by processes of globalization, mobility and urbanization. Within this theoretical framework, the article describes the case of Cianciana, in Sicily, where sulfur wastes and new international inhabitants refer to stories of ‘restanza’, forms of tourist reuse of industrial heritage and residential tourism practices. Through this case, the article reflects on the village as a relational space, reconfigured by trajectories that hold together globalization and marginalization, innovation and abandonment, new migrations and persistent abandonments
