The article focuses on a specific aspect of Penna's poetics: the symmetrical relationship between joyful and bleak, negative elements. The analysis starts from existing critical studies on the author's style and his relationship between poetry and reality. Thence it underlines the tension between the desire to escape, understood as anesthetization of the negative, and its reversion by way of a balanced use of various rhetorical and stylistic devices. Some excerpts of Penna's literary works are also examined in order to evaluate to what extent negation is involved in his poetics, and in particular one of his first poems - indeed a sort of Manifesto of his own poetry – is discussed.
