The aim of this article is to propose a study of resentment as an organizing criterion for the relationships among characters and as a generative principle of the plot. Firstly, we will consider resentment from a relational perspective, using the notion of mimetic desire theorized by René Girard (1961) and demonstrating its possible literary application through Les Bonnes (1946) by Jean Genet. Subsequently, we will analyze Chanson douce (2016) by Leïla Slimani, which serves as a case study for this essay, by examining the narrative cores previously identified in the pièce and observing how resentment not only structures the plot and the relationships between various characters, but it is also the tool used by the servant protagonists in both works for an impossible assertion of identity.
