The Tuber borchii mycelium cellular changes resulting from heavy metals toxicity and stresses are presented in this work; in particular programmed cell death (determined by ELISA and TUNEL reactions) was induced by different concentration of lead and cadmium on Tuber borchii mycelium in vitro. Mycelium morphology and structural changes were described by Trasmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy TEM and SEM). The effect of lead and cadmium on tyrosinase and peroxidase activity in mycelium extracts was also evaluated. Heavy metal ions interact with fungi at different levels, from extracellular interactions to intercellular ones; a review of heavy metals effects on a range of fungi from all major taxonomic groups is also reported in his work.
