The study of architectural history focuses on the physical space constructed by man, its immanent, tangible presence and its dimension as event, as spatial and temporal happening. The cognitive act is the experiential act. But it is the lived experience of the event as a sequence of spatial/temporal events, up to the event in the present that sums up all the previous ones. The model thus expresses – in the sense that it contains – the history and the passage of time of the situation explored from its conception, to its creation, to its transformations, up to the current period: historic/synchronic and diachronic sections, reconstructions and/or visualisations of modified situations, or intentions and prefigurations never actually implemented, or simply narrated. If we refer to Paul Ricoeur’s reflections on the narrative dimension of architecture and the temporal dimension of architectural space, we can reconsider the model itself as a ‘visual account’ of an architectural narration. The structured and complex model, as explained thus far, figures in the process of historical/critical analysis as a ‘document’ therefore itself open to interpretation, but also a genuine ‘historical/critical text’ expressed with the language of figuration in the virtual dimension. Aim of the research it’s the use of new technologies in the field of architectural and urban heritage knowledge, for its protection conservation and exploitation, with particular reference to the following issues: – integration between different surveying technologies (Direct, Instrumental, Laser scanning, Digital photogrammetry); – integration between data acquired with digital technologies and traditional ones. Standardization of data acquisition, organization and management – both digital as traditional ones (graphics, iconographic and documentary) – in order to make them compatible for building integrated knowledge models; – 3D representative models realization. Investigate issues of 3D digital structured definition modelling for Architectural Informative Systems, useful for: visualization (through interactive exchange formats), media data management, consultation tools (interactive and multimedia). – integration between 3D models and informative systems in GIS environment. Study of combination between the architecture of the information system and the design of the 3D model, aimed at defining operational standards that enable effective management of the integrated database, also according to its network possible use.

Abstract

Complex Models for Architectural and Urban Heritage We had the honour to carry on with continuity, for two consecutive two-year periods, with the same research groups, an interesting study, developed within the MIUR PRIN COFIN, the research co-financing system of the Italian Ministry of Education University and Research: the program started with the study “Integrated information systems in architectural and urban heritage conservation, protection and exploitation” and concluded with “Complex models for architectural and urban heritage”. It’s evident the relationship between the two subject matters with the constant reference to the architectural and urban heritage (actual result of the secular process of historical city formation and transformation) – main object of our research –, with the strategic aim of its conservation and exploitation. Thus, with the second stage of the research, the pointing out on Informative Systems develops to the study on Complex Models, as privileged instrument to realize both the information system as restoration projects. In the last years, within the scientific field SSD ICAR/17, the attention to the issues on 3D modelling has increased, in connection to the ones on architectural and urban surveying, also with the aim to study the modalities for an automatic transition from the survey to the model, without forgetting the operations of critical assessment still required. Therefore foundation of the research it’s the references to the large number of studies developed in the scientific field of “Drawing”. The model, in its role as mediator between the intellect and tangible reality, is the tool people use to organise their mental representations of perceptible, phenomenal reality. In the contemporary period this takes the form of a digital replica, with its own autonomy, and a level of verisimilitude and immersive potential that raises doubts over its being an integral substitute for reality within the cognitive process.
