En-Kyklo-Paidèia – culture that circulates, all-round culture. This is how Aldo Visalberghi defined, in Pedagogia e scienze dell’educazione (1978, 1986), the Encyclopedia of pedagogic sciences. This definition is then reprised by the title of the first volume of the Acts of the Seminar Theories – Praxes and Histories of Education, which took place at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the L’Aquila University roughly from 2003 to 2007. The idea at the root of both this initiative and the text it produced is that knowldege is multidimensional and plural, it flows and sways between theory and praxis, theoresis and history, past and present and between science, techniques and technologies; knowledge is by nature eternally unquiet and sways from expropriation (by philosophy, humanities, politics) and subsequent estrangement and then re-appropriation, acquisition of a new conscience and re-acquisition of self. The book aims at representing an introduction to the study of education and pedagogy and their history, based on this complex, circular dýnamis between the synchronic dimension and the diachronic one, from the synchronic dimension to the diachronic one, from the nomothetic point of view to the idiographic one and so on and so forth. All these dualisms have been rendered by dividing the text in three sections: Paths, Profiles and Perspectives.
