The paper concerns the design optimization of a 45 kW buried type PM synchronous motor by using a procedure that combines the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with an optimization routine. The FEA results have been confirmed by comparison with several experimental results. The aim of the optimization is the weight reduction and it is carried out considering different design strategies and constraints. Several optimized designs have been found and discussed.

Abstract
