The WAI (Work Ability Index) questionnaire, that evaluates the perceived work ability, has been given to a sample of 416 workers from chemical, energetic, sanitary and public fields. Results show a negative correlation between age and WAI score, that is a work ability decrease by aging. The total WAI score is lower in working fields where a more psycho-physical effort is requested. The sanitary field, in spite of a bigger psycho-physical effort, has a WAI score higher than other fields in the youngest age group, but it has the fastest decrease by aging. Aging influences negatively the self-perceived work ability related to following years, especially in those occupations with a bigger physical effort, according to the literature data. Moreover, the psychological evaluation is higher in those working fields and age groups with a higher WAI score. This data confirm that the good self-esteem and the psychological wellbeing can positively influence the work ability development. It is advisable to put in place primary and secondary prevention programs in order to decrease the main causes of morbidity and mortality, which would reduce work ability.
