Total alkyl nitrates (ΣRONO2) are products of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation chains and may represent the largest fraction of the reactive nitrogen species. VOCs oxidation produces also NO2 that, during the day, is the tropospheric ozone (O3) precursor, whereas during the nighttime, O3 is mainly loss via reactions with NOx. Odd-oxygen (Ox) defined as the sum of O3 and NO2, allows to assess the impact of nitrogen oxides on the O3 production, during the day, and loss, during the night. The observations of ΣRONO2 on board the FAAM aircraft BAe-146, during RONOCO (ROle of Nighttime chemistry in controlling the Oxidising Capacity) campaigns (summer 2010 and winter 2011), are used to distinguish plumes originated during the day from those during the night, through the slope of the O3 vs ΣRONO2. Simultaneous observations of other nitrogen oxides (ΣRO2NO2, N2O5 NO3, PAN, HNO3) allow to calculate the Ox budget. Conditions for the closure of the Ox budget: the contribution of each nitrogen oxides and the impact on the ozone production, will be discussed.

Aircraft total alkyl nitrates observations during RONOCO campaign: implication for the odd-oxygen budget
