A Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) model for the lightning protection system of a building is presented. This model makes possible to analize the electromagnetic environment inside the building during direct or nearby lightning strike and to solve complex and practical EMC problems such as the coupling of the field generated by the LPS (during a direct or nearby lightning strike) with metallic boxes containing large mainframes or telecommunication apparata. A matrix solution of the whole set of equations describing the LPS and the boxes allows one to predict the current distribution in the LPS downconductors and the induced voltages and currents on the metallic surfaces of the boxes. Results are given in frequency and time domain for direct and nearby lightning strike and for different position and grounding of the cabinets inside the LPS volume.
