Querying a large geographic database is much more complex than querying a business-oriented database, this mainly because of the complexity of geographic data and the large variety of spatial relationships and operations that can be modeled among geographic objects. In this paper, we propose an object calculus suitable for querying geographic databases. The object calcuhts is based on an object-oriented data model customized for the representation of topological relationships and spatial operations. Special attention is also devoted to the visualization of spatial query results.

Abstract

Querying a large geographic database is much more complex than querying a business-oriented database, this mainly because of the complexity of geographic data and the large variety of spatial relationships and operations that can be modeled among geographic objects. In this paper, we propose an object calculus suitable for querying geographic databases. The object calcuhts is based on an object-oriented data model customized for the representation of topological relationships and spatial operations. Special attention is also devoted to the visualization of spatial query results.
