In this paper an experimental investigation on the laser forming of steel sheet performed by means of diode laser operating in a wide range of power is carried out. The sheet bending angle is measured during laser irradiation and its analysis permits to withdraw some fundamentals considerations on the forming mechanism. The amount of sheet bending is affected by the properties of the work material, by the laser beam power distribution and by the feed speed, which in turn result to be the main factors controlling the process. A technological model is presented for the prediction of the sheet bending in multi-pass operations, which takes into account the machining parameters as well as the bending evolution during the first stages.
