The Fucino Lake, once one of the largest lakes in Italy (about 170 km2), was completely drained in 1854-76, almost two thousand years after the first, only partially successful attempt carried out by the Romans. The main central channel is still at present the most important catchment drain of the reclaimed Fucino plain. In the final part of the channel, where the banks, excavated in very soft silty-clayey soils, are very high, a series of slidings and erosion phenomena occurred over the years, leading to partial filling and reducing the hydraulic capacity of the channel. This paper illustrates the engineering process followed to design the remedial works, accounting for the nature of the soils, the environmental peculiariry of the site and the very high seismicity of the region. A technique based on in situ soil improvement (jet-grouting) was chosen as the most suitable for the stabilization works, which enabled to restore the full hydraulic capacity of the channel, to ensure the stability of the banks and, at the same time, to preserve the natural environment.
