This paper presents the most significant results of a comprehensive site investigation program carried out in order to achieve a detailed ground property characterization for the design of an artificial tunnel, part of a major high-speed railway line project. The investigation was mostly aimed at evaluating deformation and flow parameters, since controlling settlements and their evolution was essential in this project. The geotechnical parameters for design were determined based on the interpretation and comparative analysis of a large amount of data obtained from in situ flat dilatometer tests (DMT), cone penetrometer and piezocone tests (CPT/CPTU), DMTA dissipation tests, boreholes and laboratory testing.
