Mechanical clinching is gaining growing interest since reduced joining time, easiness and cleanness of the process, possibility to join materials with different thermal and mechanical behaviors, low environmental impact. The present work is aimed at investigating the joinability of metal sheets with different thermoplastic polymers (including PC, PS, PMMA) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) by means of mechanical clinching. To this end, different tools were employed including rectangular and round tools in order to study the joinability and mechanical performances and failure mode of the realized joints. In addition, in order to improve the polymer toughness during the clinching operation, an experimental pre-heating equipment was employed to heat the thermoplastic sheets before joining.

Abstract
Mechanical clinching is gaining growing interest since reduced joining time, easiness and cleanness of the process, possibility to join materials with different thermal and mechanical behaviors, low environmental impact. The present work is aimed at investigating the joinability of metal sheets with different thermoplastic polymers (including PC, PS, PMMA) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) by means of mechanical clinching. To this end, different tools were employed including rectangular and round tools in order to study the joinability and mechanical performances and failure mode of the realized joints. In addition, in order to improve the polymer toughness during the clinching operation, an experimental pre-heating equipment was employed to heat the thermoplastic sheets before joining.Pubblicazioni consigliate
