Abstract

We discuss the needs for considering optical transmission over multi-mode and multi-core optical fibers, and present modeling tools that allow the analysis of such systems. Our main emphasis is on accurately representing the effects of linear and nonlinear mode-coupling mechanisms. In the case of linear coupling we emphasize the effects of modal dispersion, whereas in the nonlinear case we show that propagation is accurately represented in terms of coupled Manakov equations allowing the prediction of intriguing new physical phenomena.
