A non invasive method for determination of lumbar spine geometry is presented. This method performs a spatial spine reconstruction by a 3D scansion of the trunk. It analyses the geometric model of the trunk surface to identify the line which divides it into two specular portions. The method furnishes a spine shape representation in the form of a 3D curve (spline) which represents also trunk rotation. The accuracy has been evaluated in some test cases and is found to be better to the accuracy of marker based methods.

Abstract

A non invasive method for determination of lumbar spine geometry is presented. This method performs a spatial spine reconstruction by a 3D scansion of the trunk. It analyses the geometric model of the trunk surface to identify the line which divides it into two specular portions. The method furnishes a spine shape representation in the form of a 3D curve (spline) which represents also trunk rotation. The accuracy has been evaluated in some test cases and is found to be better to the accuracy of marker based methods.
