April 6, 2009 a major quake hit the historical town of L’Aquila and the territory of the Abruzzo region, in Italy. About 50% of the buildings were heavily damaged and about 100000 people had to be evacuated. Time for rehabilitation of the structures, both in case of strategic and civil buildings, was estimated in terms of several years, so that a large number of new edifices had to be rapidly built by the Italian Government to avoid people from staying too long in emergency camps outdoor. To save time in construction and to make casting easier, buildings foundations and solid flat slabs at the first floor, have been made in SCC. A large amount of SCC was required for these operation and quality of concrete has been accurately monitored by the Italian Government Institutions. In the time window of about 80 days a global amount of about 123000 m3 of SCC was produced and delivered in more than 187 different construction sites by a unique contractor. In this paper quality control tests and statistical analysis of the results are discussed, focusing on reliability of concrete performances both in fresh and hard state. Slump flow diameter and compressive strength of concrete varied in the ranges of 650÷750 mm and 45÷50 MPa respectively. Results showed that although SCC remains an “handle with care” product compared to ordinary concrete, ready mix concrete producers can successfully guarantee SCC performances also in case of complex applications in large size construction fields.
