Abstract

Observations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone, particulate matter and meteorological parameters were used to study the evolution of the air quality in the town of L'Aquila (Italy). The radon (radioactive, noble gas) is emitted by soil and it is usually monitored to understand its possible emission increase due to fault breaking during earthquakes. In this work, radon was observed in the atmosphere to use in regression models in order to address the role of vertical transport in the measured ozone levels. The results of model simulations showed the key role of atmospheric dynamics in the pollution evolution based on continuous observations and in a case study where changes on the atmospheric composition were detected, due to a fire event emissions.
